STARK
REALITY

The web is becoming too smooth to remember.

Company Role

The web is an exercise in disappearing. We hide the scrollbars and flatten the hierarchies until every site feels like a wing of the same hospital. It is a sanitized version of reality. Efficiency over connection.

Efficiency is the enemy of memory. You remember city streets with broken bricks. You don't remember airport terminals. Why treat digital space like an airport?

Visual Study: Persistence of Texture
Fig 2.1

Special Gothic Expanded breaks the grid. It says this word is more important than the white space around it. It forces the eye to stretch. This is friction. This is design that demands you stay present.

The Argument

Question
Isn't this just bad UX?
Vane
Bad UX is a lack of intention. If I want you to slow down, that's a choice. The 'user' is a myth. People want to feel things. They want to be surprised.

If the design doesn't make you pause, it's just plumbing. It's a way to get from point A to point B. And if we spend our whole lives just traveling between points, we miss everything.

The takeaway

"Stop optimizing for the click. Optimize for the gaze."
